Generally, the documents for university admission are similar, with few exceptions of recommendation letters for postgraduate programs or work experience letters for specific courses.
But, we have listed down documents that almost every UK university requires for admission to international students. Here is a list of required documents according to the level of studies.

UK Undergraduate Required Documents
- A Valid Passport: With validity till completion of your studies.
- Birth Certificate: Stating your birth name, date, and place.
- Academic Transcripts: Attested copies of previous degrees or transcripts or certificates stating your grades, marks, or CGPA.
- Resume/CV: Stating your details, academic achievement, and work experiences.
- Letters of Recommendation: One (or) two letters from professors or work employers.
- English-Language Proficiency test score: IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo, or iBT to showcase your command of English.
- Statement of Purpose(SOP): It is a personal letter written for the university admission panel/committee to tell your reasons for selecting their university and a certain program.
Required Documents for Masters in the UK
- A Valid Passport: With validity till completion of your studies.
- Birth Certificate: Stating your birth name, date, and place.
- Previous Academic Certificate & Transcripts: Original (or) attested copies of Grade 12th (HSC) or any bachelor’s degree/transcript.
- Resume/CV: Stating your educational qualifications, academic achievements, and work experiences.
- Letters of Recommendation: Two or three reference letters from your university professors or previous employers.
- Proof of Language Proficiency: You need to showcase your strong ability in English by taking proficiency tests or a MOI Letter, which is an official document from your previous institute that exempts you from giving any language tests.
- Statement of Purpose (SOP): An official intent letter explains why you are the best candidate to be selected in a particular program.
Required Documents for PhD in the UK
- A Valid Passport: With validity till completion of your studies.
- Birth Certificate: Stating your birth name, date, and place.
- Previous Academic Certificate & Transcripts: Transcripts of 2.1 or 2.2 Upper-Class Master’s Degrees with exceptional grades.
- Research Proposal: A request letter to get a scholarship to research in a certain area of the field.
- Statement of Purpose (SOP): It is a written document to address the admission panel with your purpose, career aspirations, interests, goals, and the motivations behind your choice to pursue a specific program.
- Resume/CV: Stating your educational qualifications, academic achievements, and work experiences.
English Proficiency test scores: Minimum 6.0 bands in IELTS or 100+ score in TOEFL to showcase your strong command of English. - Letters of Recommendation: Three reference letters from your university professors or previous employers.
List of Important Documents for UK Study
- Valid Travel Document: Your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after the completion date of your course.
- CAS Letter: You must have a confirmation of acceptance for studies (known as CAS) from your course-providing institution. It is among the important documents for a UK student visa.
- English Language Test Results: You must provide evidence of your English language proficiency. The required level of English proficiency depends on your course and nationality.\
- Proof of Financial Support: You must demonstrate enough financial resources to sustain and afford your tuition fees and study expenses. Personal bank statements, bank loan letters, official financial sponsorship letters from your parents, or scholarship grants are supporting documents for a UK student visa.
- Medical Insurance: You need private medical insurance for visa application and university enrollment. This insurance must cover your medical treatments privately.
- Letter of consent from government sponsor: If you have been granted a government scholarship or financial sponsorship in the previous year, you must provide evidence to confirm your agreement to pursue the application for a Student Visa.
- Police Clearance Certificate: International students from certain countries (such as Bangladesh) need a police clearance certificate.
- Tuberculosis Test Results: You need to get tested for tuberculosis tests if your study duration is longer than 6 months in the UK.
All Academic Certificates & Marksheets
- For Undergraduate Studies: You will need a high school certificate (HSC). It demonstrates your academic standing and how you performed in Grade 12th.
- For Postgraduate Studies: You will need a bachelor's degree certificate or transcript as official evidence to demonstrate completion and academic performance of your undergraduate degree.
- For Doctoral or Postdoctoral Studies (PhD): You will need a master’s degree certificate or transcript as official proof to demonstrate the completion and academic standing of your graduate or postgraduate degree.
Certificates of English Proficiency Test Score
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System): It is the most widely accepted language proficiency test score. You will need 6.0 bands IELTS for UK undergraduate studies and 6.5 IELTS bands for graduate studies.
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Many top colleges and universities accept international students with a minimum of 80 scores for undergraduate programs, and 90 for graduate/postgraduate programs.
- PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English): Most universities and colleges are now widely accepting international students with PTE Academic. Generally, you can apply with a score of 65 for undergraduate or equivalent programs and 79 for postgraduate programs.
- Cambridge English: Many educational institutions accept international students with a score of 185 for undergraduate or equivalent programs and 190 for postgraduate programs.
Statement of Purpose (SOP)
- Your Introduction: Write about yourself in this section. Give an overview of your academic background, and what motivates you to pursue it.
- Your Academic Qualifications: Outline your academic qualifications, other academic achievements, and scores (or grades).
- Your Work Experience: Mention your work experience with companies (or employers) you worked with. Also include internships and volunteer work.
- Your Personal Skills: Highlight what of your personal skills (such as leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving) make you best for the program.
- Your Reason To Study in the UK: Explain why certain courses and universities are chosen to study in the UK.
- Your Interest: Conclude the statement of purpose for UK university with main convincing points, and your aspirations in the intended program.
Recommendation Letter
The process of writing a letter of recommendation for UK student visa requires individuals to follow a certain format, such as:
- Introduce Your Relation: Tell your relation to the application and why you are writing a reference letter. Explain the applicant’s academic accomplishments, personal qualities and motivations to the admission committee.
- Support Your Claims With Evidence: Tell a true story where the applicant demonstrated more personal and professional skills, such as being a team leader or passionate professional.
- Write Clearly & Professionally: Use proper vocabulary and grammar and avoid typos to make your reference letter look clear and concise. Proofread carefully before handing it over to the applicant.
Curriculum Vitae/Resume
- Accurate Personal Information: Include your name, date of birth, and contact information.
- Formal & Informal Education: Include every qualification or degree you have completed, along with its completion year, name of the institution.
- Work Experience: Include previous jobs with their titles, duration responsibilities, and employer’s name.
- Kills: Include your personal and professional skills. It can be hard and soft skills, such as teamwork, hard work, and technical skills.
Working Experience Letters
Your employer can provide a working experience letter with certain essential information mentioned, such as date of letter issuance, salutation, employee name (your name), date of joining and leaving, designation (or job title), assigned job roles, and a good wish message for future success.
Passport
You can check your Bangladeshi passport for UK study by carefully looking at the front page where the expiry date is mentioned. However, if your passport expires soon, you should reapply (or) renew your passport before applying for a student visa. In Bangladesh, you can apply online for passport renewal from the ease of your home. But, before applying, keep the following things in mind:
- Your passport should be damage-free and in neat condition.
- Your passport copy must be with the student visa application.
- Your passport should have one page blank for a study visa.
Financial Capacity Evidence
- £1,334 per month is required to study duration within London.
- £1,023 per month is required for study duration outside of London.
For UK student visa financial evidence, you need to showcase enough financial resources to cover the expenses during the studies (such as tuition fees, accommodation, food expenses, and health insurance). You can show the required funds either of these:
- Bank Statement.
- Education Loan Letter.
- Salary Pay Slips with an employment contract.
- Scholarship or grant approval letter.
- Letter from a sponsor or parents.
- Recent year tax returns.
International students can either show a 3-month (or) 6-month bank statement as proof of financial evidence. However, the minimum amount required depends on the individual’s program duration and visa category.
Additional Documents
- Travel insurance: You should have valid travel insurance covering your entire study duration in the United Kingdom.
- Confirmation of Accommodation: You should provide a tenancy agreement between you and your landlord as proof of accommodation confirmation.
- Proof of relationship: You should provide a marriage certificate or family registration certificate if you are married or have dependent children(s).
- Equivalency Certificate: If your previous education is from a different educational system, you should provide an equivalency certificate.
- Portfolio: You should provide your work portfolio if you apply for design, architecture, or arts-related programs.
