International Migration and Ethnic Relations, Master's Programme (Two-Year)

The Master’s Programme in International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER, Two-Year) at Malmö University is a leading, research-connected postgraduate degree designed to provide deep theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented understanding of global human mobility, diversity, and ethnic coexistence. Taught entirely in English within the Faculty of Culture and Society (Department of Global Political Studies), this programme awards a Master of Arts (120 ECTS) with a major in International Migration and Ethnic Relations. Situated in Malmö—one of Northern Europe's most multicultural urban centers—the programme integrates real-world social dynamics with world-renowned migration research conducted at the Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM).
The two-year curriculum combines multidisciplinary social science frameworks with advanced empirical methodology. The first year establishes comprehensive foundations in migration theories, globalization, ethnic relations, asylum policies, and qualitative/quantitative research methods. During the second year, students pursue advanced specializations in themes such as Migration and Integration or Migration and Social Theory. The third semester offers unique flexibility to study abroad through the prestigious European Master in Migration Studies (EuMIGS) double degree and exchange network, undertake a credit-bearing professional internship, or conduct supervised field research. The programme culminates in the fourth semester with an independent Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS), conducting in-depth scientific investigations into contemporary migration, integration, or minority relations dilemmas.
