Chemistry, Master's Programme

The Master’s Programme in Chemistry at Linköping University (Institute of Technology - LiTH) is an advanced two-year postgraduate degree designed to prepare chemists, materials scientists, and biochemists for addressing complex global challenges in energy storage, sustainable materials, and healthcare. Taught entirely in English within the Faculty of Science and Engineering (Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology - IFM), this programme awards a Master of Science (120 ECTS) with a major in Chemistry. It takes a molecule-centred approach that bridges traditional boundaries between organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on laboratory experimentation and molecular design. Students can tailor their academic pathway across distinct profiles such as Materials Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Sustainable Chemistry. Coursework covers advanced topics including Molecular Physics, Chemical Bonding, Synthesis and Characterisation of Nanomaterials, Medicinal Chemistry, Biomaterials, Spectroscopy and Molecular Interaction, Advanced Organic Synthesis, and Supramolecular Chemistry. Students gain hands-on training with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation, including NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, and electron microscopy within IFM's research laboratories. The degree culminates in the fourth semester with an independent Master’s Thesis (30, 45, or 60 ECTS), conducted within cutting-edge academic research groups or in collaboration with industrial life science and materials partners.
