Malaysia University Application Process for International Students

In recent years, Malaysia has become a very popular destination for academic purposes. Since the late 90s, the number of international students continuing their higher studies in Malaysia has increased steadily.

More than 170,000 are estimated to be currently enrolled in Malaysia’s world-class universities for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Now, students from all countries, especially Bangladesh are welcome to pursue their higher education at prestigious Malaysian universities.

If you meet all entry requirements set by the university, then you can prepare your documents and fill out your Malaysia university application form to submit it online or through mail.

Check Requirements To Study In Malaysia

You must meet academic, language proficiency and visa requirements. Generally, Malaysian universities require a high school diploma or a Bachelor’s degree with a good CGPA for undergraduate and postgraduate programs respectively. You must have a good English language proficiency test score for language requirements. To get a Malaysia visa, you must have all required documents and a valid student pass issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department. The estimated amount required to study in Malaysia ranges RM 35,000 and RM 70,000 per year.

Select A Suitable Study Program & Institution

Choose a course that aligns with your academic interests, skills, and professional goals and find an institution that offers the specific program you’re interested in. However, you must check if you can easily afford to pay the institution’s tuition fee. 

Although there are many popular courses for international students, the most high demand course in Malaysia is Information Technology (IT). Some other best courses include software engineering, human resource management, public relations, business and finance, data science, cyber security, medicine, and law. 

Check Application Deadlines & University Policy 

Every university in Malaysia has different application submission deadlines depending on the intakes they offer. However, the Malaysia university application deadlines commonly fall between March and October. Some common university policies are: 

  1. You must have 12 years of education or a degree from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education. 
  2. You can work part-time for 20 hours per week only during holidays or semester breaks. 
  3. You are not allowed to participate in any activity or job that is considered immoral. 

Prepare your Documents & Submit Application

You must submit all of your academic, personal, financial and additional documents to support your application submission in Malaysian university including: 

  1. Degree certificates
  2. Academic transcripts
  3. English language proficiency tests scores such as IELTS or TOEFL. 
  4. Copies of your valid passport
  5. A well-written personal statement or essay
  6. Letters of recommendation
  7. A CV or Resume
  8. Proof of financial support or resources such as your bank statements.
  9. Medical Reports
  10. Certificates for Extracurricular Activities & Skills 
  11. Portfolio or 
  12. Police clearance certificate
  13. Research proposal (if applicable). 

Pay Application Fee & Track your Application

The application fee for universities in Malaysia varies, depending on the program of study and course duration. However, the common universities in Malaysia application fee ranges from RM 200 to RM 400 for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. International students can track their university application via two different methods that are: 

  1. Online Portal: You can check your admission application status using the university’s online application portal. 
  2. Admission Office: You can contact the university’s admission office to get an update about your application. 

Receive Offer Letter 

An Malaysian university offer letter is a formal document sent to the selected applicants only. It informs the applicants to accept or reject the offer within a specific time frame. So, applicants must respond to the offer and pay a deposit if they accept the offer. 

To get an acceptance letter, you have to submit your university application along with all required documents and a compelling personal statement. The university will send you an offer letter if you get accepted via email or online portal.

Do the Medical from Registered Clinic 

You must undergo all medical examinations that are mandatory for getting a Malaysia visa. Every medical test to study in Malaysia must be conducted at a hospital or medical center approved by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. Generally, the following medical tests are required.

  1. Complete Physical Examination
  2. Blood Tests
  3. Upper Body X-rays

The total amount of all medical check ups completely vary, depending on the number of tests and the medical centre you choose. However, you can expect to pay up to RM 300 to RM 500. 

Apply for Student Visa & Pay EMGS Fees 

To get a Malaysia student visa, you must have an acceptance letter from a specific Malaysian university and be registered with Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). Submit all required documents including the acceptance letter to get registered and pay the EMGS fees which ranges from RM 2,450 to RM 4,200. 

Download your visa approval letter from the EMGS portal and submit it to the Malaysian embassy in Bangladesh with all necessary documents. Pay the visa fee and attend the visa interview. 

Attend Orientation and Enrolment 

To study in Malaysia, you must get your enrollment done for a specific course of your interest offered by the university you have applied for. For that, you must verify your documents including academic records and pay your fees online or in-person to receive your student ID card. 

You must attend an orientation program held by your university before the classes start. Orientation in Malaysian universities provides information to international students about campus facilities, faculty, curriculum pathways, administrative units, student life and culture of Malaysia.
