The Bachelor of Midwifery program is designed for those who want to confidently care for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first six weeks after birth. Students will gain essential skills to work independently and take full responsibility for mothers' and babies' health and well-being. This program equips students to support families safely and effectively. Students will study full-time and must complete the program within five years, as required by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). The first year focuses on theory, while the second and third years balance theory and practical learning. The fourth year is mostly practical. Students can enroll in regional hubs if they live within the hub's catchment area. The program includes compulsory clinical placements, where students gain hands-on experience in birth centers, hospitals, and with community midwives. Students also attend mandatory block courses in Hamilton. They must complete one four-week clinical placement outside their local area, typically in years three or four. Upon completing the program, students must attend the National Midwifery Examination to become registered midwives. This structured program offers a direct path to a successful career as a midwife. It combines academic learning with clinical experience in maternal and newborn care.
