The Master’s Programme in Infection Biology at Uppsala University is a world-class, research-driven two-year postgraduate degree designed to address major global threats posed by infectious pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Taught entirely in English within the Faculty of Medicine (Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology), this programme awards a Master of Medical Science (120 ECTS) with a major in Infection Biology. It integrates advanced molecular biology, host-pathogen interactions, epidemiology, and diagnostic technology to explore how bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi emerge, mutate, cause disease, and interact with the immune system. The curriculum balances comprehensive theoretical seminars with intensive laboratory experimentation. During the first year, students complete advanced coursework covering Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Infection Biology, and Advanced Neurobiology or Clinical Microbiology. In the second year, students study Evolutionary and Molecular Virology alongside Global Health and Infection Control. The programme offers substantial laboratory-based training, enabling students to master recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, flow cytometry, and pathogen diagnostics. The degree culminates in an independent Master’s Thesis (30 or 45 ECTS), carried out within leading academic research groups at the Biomedical Centre (BMC), Uppsala University Hospital, or in collaboration with international life science enterprises.
