Master's Programme in Embedded Systems

The Master’s Programme in Embedded Systems at Uppsala University is an elite, research-oriented two-year postgraduate degree designed to prepare engineers and computer scientists for the forefront of intelligent hardware-software co-design. Taught entirely in English within the Faculty of Science and Technology (Department of Information Technology), this programme awards a Master of Science (120 ECTS) in Embedded Systems or Computer Science. It addresses the growing complexity of modern microprocessors running millions of lines of code inside autonomous vehicles, medical devices, robotics, telecommunication infrastructure, IoT networks, and smart consumer electronics. The curriculum balances rigorous theoretical computer science with applied engineering practice, focusing on software design, real-time operating systems, multi-core architecture, and formal system verification. Core and elective modules cover Programming Embedded Systems, Computer Architecture, Real-Time Systems, Wireless Sensor Networks, Model-Based Design of Embedded Software, Hardware/Software Co-design, and Advanced Computer Graphics. Students gain extensive hands-on experience in cutting-edge laboratory facilities, learning to write low-level code, optimize power consumption, and ensure safety-critical reliability. The program culminates in an independent Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS), which can be completed within world-leading research groups at the Polacksbacken IT campus or in direct collaboration with pioneering industrial tech partners.
