he Master’s Programme in Intelligent Software Systems at Karlstad University is an advanced, two-year research-connected postgraduate degree engineered to train software architects, AI engineers, and system developers capable of designing next-generation autonomous, adaptive, and data-intensive software architectures. Taught entirely in English within the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science), this programme awards a Master of Science (120 ECTS) in Computer Science. It addresses the accelerating convergence of traditional software engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud platforms, and distributed systems across mission-critical industries. Throughout the curriculum, students gain mastery over the design, implementation, and rigorous evaluation of complex software systems that learn, reason, and adapt autonomously. Coursework covers advanced topics such as Intelligent Software Engineering, Machine Learning and Data-Driven Systems, Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing, Software Architecture for Complex Systems, Systems Modeling and Simulation, Advanced Verification and Testing, and Empirical Research Methods in Computer Science. Practical team-based software engineering labs and experimental projects provide deep exposure to contemporary agile frameworks, microservices, continuous integration pipelines (CI/CD), and edge computing. The degree culminates in an independent Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS), conducted either within Karlstad University's world-class Computer Science research laboratories or in partnership with leading global technology corporations.
