Every international student who wants to study in Malaysia needs to get a student visa from the concerned authorities in their home country. For the student visa, you must meet the Malaysian student visa requirements for Bangladeshi students, including:

  1. Academic Excellence: You must have at least 60% of marks or equivalent in your previous degree or course from a recognized educational institute to apply for an undergraduate or postgraduate program. 
  2. English Language Proficiency: You must provide proof of your English proficiency such as high scores in IELTS, TOEFL, MUETor PTE. However, some universities may accept IELTS only. So, it depends on whether the university accepts other English proficiency tests or alternative options.
  3. Documentation: You must submit all requisite documents, including your academic transcripts, certificates (if any), personal statement, letters of recommendation, and proof of financial support.

English Language Requirements

English is used as the medium of instruction in Malaysian universities. So, you must demonstrate your English proficiency skills to get into a university in Malaysia. Although most universities have an IELTS requirement for Malaysia study as it is a widely accepted English language proficiency test, others may also accept alternative options such as TOEFL or MUET. 

Generally, Malaysian universities require at least a 5.5 IELTS score for undergraduate and a 6.0 score for postgraduate programs. However, if your university accepts any other English proficiency test, you must get the required TOEFL or MUET scores. However, the English language requirements to study in Malaysia depend on your nationality, level of study, and chosen university. So, you must check these language requirements before applying. 

Undergraduate Eligibility Criteria in Malaysia

The eligibility criteria for undergraduate in Malaysia ultimately depend on your chosen discipline and university. However, there are some standard requirements set by all universities that international students must meet to get enrolled in an undergraduate program, including:

  • Academic Qualifications: You must have at least 60% of the marks in a high school degree or equivalent.
  • English Language Proficiency: You must have at least a minimum 5.5 score in an English proficiency test such as IELTS, TOEFL, or MUET, depending on the requirements set by your university.

Masters Eligibility Criteria in Malaysia

  • Bachelor’s Degree: You have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute in a relevant field.  
  • CGPA Requirement: A minimum CGPA of 2.75 in a Bachelor’s degree is required for getting into a Master’s program. 
  • English Language Proficiency: A minimum 6.0 IELTS score or higher is required in Malaysia for a Master’s program. However, some universities may also accept good scores in English language proficiency tests such as MUET, PTE, or TOEFL.
  • Academic Documents: The original academic transcripts, relevant certificates, and letters of recommendation are required.
  • Personal Statement: A well-written personal statement highlighting your academic achievements and reasons for choosing the university. 

Apart from a two-year Master’s degree, international students can also do a 1 year Master's in Malaysia

PhD Eligibility Criteria in Malaysia

Doctoral studies students need some additional requirements to study PhD in Malaysia including health insurance, medical checkup reports, etc. Generally, the requirements for a PhD in Malaysia include: 

  • Mandatory Documents: You must have a strong academic record, a Ph.D. application form, a research proposal, academic transcripts for a Master’s degree, relevant certificates, a passport-sized photograph, and at least two letters of recommendation.  
  1. CGPA: At least 3.5 CGPA on a 4.0 scale in your Master’s degree from an accredited university.
  2. English Proficiency: A minimum 6.5 or higher bands in IELTS score are required.
  3. Financial Support: A proof of financial support such as a bank statement. It shows you have enough bank balance to cover your tuition and living expenses.
